DC DC Converters
DC-DC converters, otherwise known as switching power supplies, are electronic circuits that convert a Direct Current (DC) input voltage to a higher, or lower, DC output voltage. While the output voltage can either be lower than, equal to, or higher than the input voltage, most DC-DC converters are designed to produce an output voltage significantly higher or lower than the input. PT6726A is one such DC-DC converter.
PT6726A Application Field
PT6726A are widely used in military, aerospace, medical, computer, automotive and industrial applications where DC-DC conversion is necessary. They are particularly popular in applications requiring high efficiency and/or very low output ripple and noise. The PT6726A has a high output conversion efficiency of up to 96%, as well as low input/output isolation of 500Vrms at full load. It supports input voltages from 2.7V to 60V with an output voltage range of 0.6V to 42V and an output current of up to 10A. It can be used in both step-up and step-down configurations. Due to its wide range of input and output voltages, the PT6726A is well-suited for high performance applications such as FPGAs, microprocessors, data converters and other sensitive digital devices.
PT6726A Working Principle
The PT6726A consists of three main blocks or modules. First is the Main Switching Block, which includes an adjustable voltage reference, an internal oscillator, a high side driver, and an error amplifier. The adjustable voltage reference sets the desired output voltage. The oscillator sets the operating frequency of the converter. The high side driver drives the power switch based on the oscillator signal, and the error amplifier compares the reference voltage to the output voltage and provides feedback to the oscillator for the correction of the output voltage.
The second block is the Energy Discharge Block. It is used to regulate the output voltage when the input voltage is quickly changed or the load current is suddenly changed. Since the energy is stored in the output capacitor of the switching power supply, the Energy Discharge Block is used to discharge the energy into the inductor.
The third block is the Frequency Foldback Block. It is used to protect the switching power supply from over-temperature and to maximize the efficiency of the power supply. When the temperature of the power supply increases or the load current becomes too high, the frequency foldback block will reduce the switching frequency of the Main Switching Block. This in turn reduces the switching losses and keeps the output voltage stable, even under varying loads.
The PT6726A DC-DC converter offers excellent performance in terms of output ripple and noise, efficiency, power factor, input/output isolation, and load regulation. It is employed in various applications requiring high-performance power conversion and is available in a wide range of package types.
