Working Principle

The PT6718A is a Buck type of DC-DC converter, which uses the Inductors-capacitors-MOSFET architecture to step down the input voltage. The device consists of a PWM controller and two power MOSFETs to convert the input voltage to a regulated output voltage. The converter works on a fixed frequency PWM pulse-width modulation scheme.

The PWM controller uses a voltage-mode architecture and has under-voltage, over-voltage, short circuit protection and temperature protection. The output voltage is precisely regulated using a voltage-mode hysteretic control scheme which operates in either the discontinuous conduction mode (DCM) or the continuous conduction mode (CCM).

The device only draws current from the input supply during the switching cycle, when either of the power MOSFETs is on. The current from the input supply is then diverted through the inductor and is stored in the output filter capacitor. The inductor acts as a low pass filter, and the output capacitor acts as a high pass filter, which together in combination with the controller impart parasitic damping that reduces EMI in the system.

The output voltage can be adjusted either by the voltage feedback loop or manually using an external resistor network. The controller also features a frequency adjustment pin that allows for either lower frequency operation to minimize noise, or higher frequencies to optimize efficiency.
