PTC Resettable Fuses

PTC Resettable Fuses are a type of circuit protection device designed to detect and disrupt an overcurrent flow, similar to a traditional fuse. Unlike a fuse, however, these devices are self-resetting and can be reset a number of times without need for replacement. They are ideal for protecting electronic equipment from a short-term overload, as they are able to detect an overcurrent condition, open the circuit and carry the fault current until the overload has dissipated.

The PTR016V0300-BK is a member of the PTC Resettable Fuse family, offering a wide range of features and protection capabilities. It is rated for a holding current of 16A (PTC) and a nominal voltage of 300VAC/DC, making it suitable for high power applications.

The working mechanisms of the PTR016V0300-BK are based on a basic thermistor behavior. When current flows through the device, its thermistor elements will heat up, and the thermistor will become more resistive to current. Once the device has reached a certain temperature, the thermistor will break the circuit, interrupting the flow of current. This will cause the device to cool off and slowly reset itself, allowing the circuit to start again.

In addition to the thermistor behavior, the device also includes a cylindrical bimetal member, which will open the circuit if the current reaches a level where a hazardous temperature increase is expected. This will help protect the device from further damage, as well as the wiring and components around it.
