PTC Resettable Fuses

PTC resettable fuses are a type of fuse that uses a positive temperature coefficient (PTC) thermistor to provide current protection in applications that require 30V-160V and up to 1.6A. The PTC resettable fuse functions as an overcurrent protector to prevent overloading of circuits or components, and then reset itself when the current or temperature falls to a predetermined level.

Application Field

PTC resettable fuses are widely used in a variety of consumer electronics, automotive and industrial applications. In consumer electronics, they can be used in cell phones, tablets and PCs as overload protectors. Working Principle

The PTC resettable fuse works by using a thermister (a semiconductor device that exhibits a decrease in electrical resistance when the temperature increases) and a “trip” temperature of 80°C (176°F). The thermister resistance is determined by the current and ambient temperature. As current increases, the temperature will also increase. When the current reaches the maximum rating of the thermister, the temperature of the device will exceed the trip temperature and causes the thermistor to “trip”, meaning it becomes a high resistance. This causes the current to drop to approximately 0.1A or less. When the current drops below the trip point, the thermistor will reset and allow the current to flow again.

The PTC resettable fuse is a reliable and cost-effective solution for many applications.
