A solid-state relay (SSR) is an electronic switching device that switches on or off when a small external voltage is applied. Solid-state relays use a semiconductor switching device, usually in the form of a thyristor, optocoupler, or transistor, as the switching element instead of a mechanical contact. The PVDZ172NPBF is an optically isolated solid-state relay designed for interfacing between low voltage electronics micro-controller with load circuits which require higher electric current (up to 7 Amps). It is an ideal device for digital switching on / off any load in AC and DC circuits, motor control, heating regulation, lighting control etc.  The PVDZ172NPBF is a compact, single-channel solid-state relay for controlling DC or AC loads up to 7 Amps. It has an electric Isolation Voltage of 5kV that gives the user the ability to operate safely in high voltage environments. The PVDZ172NPBF features a built-in zero crossing detector that eliminates false tripping of the triac when load switching is required. Also, it has a built-in crowbar current limiting circuit that allows it to absorb high inductive spike current when the load is tripped off. It also has an over temperature protection circuit and over current protection circuit. In terms of form factor, the PVDZ172NPBF is a 25.4 x 17.1mm surface mount package with two 12.70mm leads. It has a nominal switching voltage of 120-240V AC, a switching current limit of 7A, and a turn-on time of 15ms typically. The PVDZ172NPBF comes in two versions, the PVDZ172NPBF-A (no zero crossing) and the PVDZ172NPBF-B (zero crossing).The working principle of the PVDZ172NPBF solid-state relay is quite simple. When the input voltage (control voltage) is applied, the optically isolated input transistor switches on and allows the main SCR (solid state switch) to switch on. The switching of this SCR enables current to flow from the input to the output side of the relay and hence the connected load is switched on. The main SCR is protected by a crowbar current limiting circuit, and an over-temperature protection circuit. When the control signal is removed, the main SCR switches off and thus disconnecting the load from the input side of the relay. The PVDZ172NPBF solid state relay is especially suited for applications where low electrical noise, high speed switching and long life are essential. Typical applications include lighting control, motor control, process control, motor speed control, temperature control, and power control. It can be used in AC or DC circuits and is designed to provide reliable and high-performance switching of loads up to 7A.
