Thyristors – TRIACs are four-layer semiconductor devices, which can be used for the control of alternating current. The devices can be used for switching, power control and phase control as well. These components are used for a variety of purposes in electronics, including in adjustable speed drives, household appliances, lighting dimmers, and heat control devices. The Q2N4RP is a four-layer Thyristor – TRIAC. It is a 400V, 20A three-phase switching device, with a minimum off state voltage of 20V. This makes it suitable for switching high voltage AC applications, which require high current capacity and high voltage withstanding capabilities. This device is most commonly used as a switching device in adjustable speed drives, motors, and other AC applications.
The working principle of the Q2N4RP is based on the motion of diode-controlled thyristors in a circuit. It consists of two thyristors in parallel, both having a forward and reverse blocking voltage capability. The thyristors are designed to control the current flow from a positive voltage source to the negative voltage source. When the device is triggered, the positive voltage will flow into the negative voltage, driving the current from the negative to the positive. This will cause the device to switch on until it is triggered again, reversing the current flow and switching the device off.
To control the current flow of the device, a gate control circuit is used. This enables the device to be turned on and off with a small voltage pulse, thereby allowing precise control of the current flow. The gate control circuit has two terminals, Gate 1 and Gate 2. When the voltage at these two terminals is the same, the device is blocked, and no current is allowed to pass through. When the voltage at Gate 1 is higher than the voltage at Gate 2, the device is triggered, and the current flows in the prescribed direction. The voltage difference at the two terminals is called the “triggering voltage”.
