Thyristors - TRIACs

Thyristors - TRIACs are a type of controllable semiconductor switch that has multiple operating modes, including ON-OFF, dimmer, full-wave, and half-wave. TRIAC stands for Triode for Alternating Current, which is an acronym for the three semiconductor devices used in the circuit: an Anode (positive voltage device), a Gate (control device) and a Cathode (negative voltage device).

Q2X3RP Application Field and Working Principle

Q2X3RP (or Quadrant Two Triggered Diode) is an advanced type of TRIAC used in industrial applications where a high power rating is required. It has four operating states in addition to the typical ON-OFF mode: QUADRANT one (Q1), two (Q2), three (Q3) and four (Q4). The Q2X3RP is capable of switching large amounts of alternating current with very fast rise and fall times. It is typically used in Motor Drives, Power Control, Industrial Lighting, Welders, and Electrical Equipment.

The Q2X3RP is an optically triggered thyristor, meaning it is triggered by light energy from the gate. This light energy triggers the opening and closing of the thyristor and thus controls the flow of current through the device. The current flow through the thyristor is controlled by the on and off state of the gate, as well as by the voltage applied across the two electrodes. When two gate pulses are received, Q2X3RP actually operates in 4 quadrant modes, providing a 4-way controllable switch with extremely fast rise and fall times.

The Q2X3RP is a highly efficient, extremely fast-switching device, capable of handling many switching applications. It offers excellent power handling capabilities and can switch up to 600 Amps of total current with a voltage rating of up to 1000 volts. By controlling the voltage and current applied to the thyristors, the Q2X3RP can also be used for pulse-width modulation or for amplitude modulation in certain applications. The Q2X3RP can operate in both AC and DC modes, making it a versatile device with many applications.

In addition to providing high efficiency switching and high power handling, the Q2X3RP also offers protection against overloads, overvoltage and short-circuits, as well as protection against EMI/RFI and high frequency electrical noise.
