Thyristors-TRIACs

Thyristors are a class of semiconductor components operated both as an electrical switch and a rectifier, and is made up of three or more pn-junction diodes. Unlike a diode, which forms a single junction that only allows electricity to go in one direction, a thyristor like the Q4004LTTP has two junctions in one piece that can complete an electrical cycle in both directions. This property makes Thyristors mostly suitable for use in AC circuits, while diodes usually only work with DC circuits. Both Thyristors and diodes can also be used in circuits that switch current on and off.

TRIACs (TRIode for Alternating Current) are a type of Thyristor, specifically designed to be used in circuits operating with AC, with two junction interfaces. These two junctions can work both in the same direction and in opposite directions, meaning that TRIACs can both open and close current, making them a flexible and reliable solution for various applications.

The Q4004LTTP is a powerful Metal Oxide Semiconductor Field Effect Triode (MOSFET) in a 3-pin nearly-TO220AC package, that fits perfectly the need for applications that require low capacitance, high speed and low on-resistance. It has a continuously variable threshold voltage between 4V and 8V, with a 500mΩ operating junction temperature range, and is perfect for applications such as motor control, AC/DC Switching, RF Amplifiers, LED lighting, converters and amplifiers.

The working principle of the Q4004LTTP is quite simple, it works as a switch between two terminals, turning on or off current flowing across the terminals, dependent on the voltage applied. This makes them suitable for use as a “switch” to control the circuit currents and voltages. The Q4004LTTP operates in two modes, the normal mode, which is the most common, wherein it acts as an electronic switch, and the special mode, where it works as a switching transistor. In the special mode, the Q4004LTTP can be used to control higher power supplies, such as more than 1.5A.
