Thyristors - TRIACs

The QJ6016NH2RP is a TRIAC (Triode for Alternating Current), a controllable semiconductor device that can switch both current ways for higher reliability. This type of Thyristor is widely used in a variety of applications such as relays, motor starters or dimmers.

Application Field

The application field for the QJ6016NH2RP is for AC switches and SCR controllers, using in high-voltage equipment such as neon signs and Air handling units. It is also used in many large lighting and climate control systems. It can be used in reverse/forward and open/closed loop control system.

Working Principle

The QJ6016NH2RP TRIAC works on a principle of alternating current current flow, where in there is no DC voltage bias between its two terminals (the anode and the gate). When the voltage at the anode is above the breakover voltage (BOV) and the gate control voltage is positive and higher than the input voltage, the switch will turn ON and will conduct current in both directions.

When the current flow causing reversal of the current direction, the TRIAC will turn OFF as the voltage drop at the anode is below the breakover voltage. The reverse voltage will be blocked and the energy stored in the gate will be released, resetting the device, which is ready to be triggered again by a new cycle of positive and negative voltages.

The gate voltage needs to be greater than the anode voltage to turn the TRIAC on. This is different from a BJT (bipolar junction transistor) which requires an appropriate voltage across the base - emitter junction for forward biasing. With a TRIAC, the gate voltage can be positive, negative or even zero.

The TRIAC works in two modes, Single Pulse Mode and Continuous Mode. In Single Pulse Mode, the TRIAC will turn ON by a single pulse from the gate input. Whereas in Continuous Mode, the TRIAC will continuously turn ON and OFF with a periodic input signal applied to the gate input.
