The RD3172MMA7456L, a small and ultra-low power digital 3-axis linear accelerometer module, is classified under Evaluation boards / Sensors. It is designed to measure three orthogonal, dynamic acceleration of an object in space with an exceptional low current of 30μA maximum. This is suitable for applications with long battery life or low power consumption.

The MEMS accelerometer module includes a MEMS accelerometer (MMA7456L) with an integrated single-supply, low-noise amplifier, low-pass filter, self-test, and configurable sleep mode. Additionally, this small device has a unique on-board static digital calibration algorithm to improve accuracy over total temperature range and maintains a high resolution up to ±6g operating range. This technique overcompensates all non-linearity in the signal path.

The accelerometer module has an I2C interface that is up to 400kHz. It allows the user to configure the device such as a “self-test” for full-scale offset or acceleration measurement range thus letting the user to control the power consumption.

The RD3172MMA7456L can be used in a variety of applications including, but not limited to, computer peripherals, security systems, handheld navigation systems, and portable bar code scanners. It can also be used in tilt-sensing applications such as Vehicle Orientation/Roll-over Detection, Tilt-measuredriddled sensors, and tilt-measured industrial controllers.

The working principle behind the accelerometer module lies in the MEMS accelerometer (MMA7456L) itself. The MEMS accelerometer module uses three sensors to detect the linear acceleration of the module. The three sensors are MEMS micro-machined capacitive sensing elements positioned orthogonally with one another. When acceleration acting on the device along any axis, the capacitive sensing element signal changes the capacitance value of the cell proportional to acceleration. This capacitance change is proportional to acceleration and therefore a voltage signal can be obtained.

The change in capacitance causes a change in the output linear voltage. The output linear voltage is digitized to 10-bits of resolution by an on-board 10 bit A/D converter. The data is then fed to the module for further processing. The module is able to process the signal and store the digital values in its internal memory. The data can then be read and fetched via the I2C interface.
