DC-DC Converters are used in many applications for power-related solutions. This type of power converter is ideally suited for remote or portable applications, where a stable voltage is required to maintain a certain level of functionality. The REC15-485.1SZ/H2 DC-DC converter is one particular device built for such applications. The device is a 3-step, 2-level single-phase, non-isolated apparatus that is designed to provide steady DC power to various applications.

The REC15-485.1SZ/H2 has a wide range of application fields. These include, but are not limited to, automotive, industrial, and Avionics, among others. Generally, this DC-DC converter is used to provide low-voltage power in comparison to the battery voltage and a higher current than that of a regular transformer. Some of its particular applications may be found in on-board charger systems for electric and hybrid vehicles, Boost converters, battery management systems, displays, communication systems, etc.

The working principle of the REC15-485.1SZ/H2 is based on two different switching stages. The first stage consists of two switches; a power MOSFET is used as the high-side switch and the low-side switch is represented by a MOSFET or an IGBT. This configuration is connected to the input voltage supply and the output voltage is set by the duty cycle of the switching signals. This stage is designed to provide the required power to the second stage, a step-down type DC-DC converter.

The second stage then takes the power from the first stage and transforms it to the output voltage level that is predetermined by the converter design. This can be achieved either through continuous conduction mode (CCM) or discontinuous conduction mode (DCM). In the REC15-485.1SZ/H2 conversion, CCM is used to serve its purpose. In CCM, the inductor current is not allowed to fall to zero and, as a result, better output voltage regulation is achieved.

The DCM, on the other hand, can be triggered based on the switching frequency and load current. In this mode, the inductor current is allowed to fall to zero and is reset to the peak inductor current when a new switching cycle is triggered. This mode is more efficient than the CCM when it comes to low load currents but it is not suitable for providing a constant voltage regulation.

The REC15-485.1SZ/H2 is designed to work with two different control topologies. The first one is the fixed-frequency PWM control that is simply adjusting the on-off switch signals. The level of the output voltage is regulated by varying the duty cycle of the switching signals, and the high frequency switching enables quick and efficient operation. The second control topology is an average current-mode control (CMC) that regulates the microchip signals based on the output voltage level.

The CMC enables the quick and efficient operation of the device from a light load right to the maximum load. The DC-DC converter is also equipped with a variety of protection features including over-voltage, under-voltage, overtemperature and short-circuit protection. All of these features combined make the REC15-485.1SZ/H2 a perfect choice for most power-related applications.
