Rotary Potentiometers and Rheostats represent different components within the industry of electrical engineering, but what are they and how do they work largely depends on the application field in question. This article seeks to explore the utility of these two components, illustrated using the example of the REE100E.

What is a Potentiometer?

A potentiometer is typically a three-terminal device with two fixed measuring terminals on either side of a third wiper terminal. REE100E Application Field & Working Principle

The REE100E is an example of a rotary potentiometer used to measure and regulate voltages up to 250VAC. In essence, it works by establishing a dynamic resistance between the two fixed terminals, and a third wiper terminal, when it is rotated across the resistive element – usually a resistive film roller. This is achieved due to the specially designed ‘Torque Balance’ construction, consisting of a rotary, 90 degree detent, and radial actuation mechanisms.

This three-terminal potentiometers is not only a truly linear resistor but is also extremely reliable and designed to be very cost-effective, making it perfect for applications such as relays, switch controls and speed controllers, just to name a few. It even features a ‘non-interruptive’ design which ensures uninterrupted continuity of the electrical contacts, making it even more reliable.
