- Working Principle of Rotary Potentiometers
- In its most basic form, a potentiometer consists of a resistive element connected to two end terminals.
- One terminal is connected to ground (generally connected to the rotary axis) and the other terminal is where the output voltage is measured.
- When the knob or shaft is rotated, it changes its resistance along with the fixed resistance of the resistive element.
- The variation in resistance in turn, changes the output voltage.
- The output voltage follows the variation in resistance such that the change in resistance is inversely proportional to the output voltage.
- The output voltage varies between two predetermined values which are generally specified in the resistor’s datasheet.
- Application of Rheostat
- Rheostats are used for voltage regulation and are often used in dimmers for controlling the light intensity of light bulbs.
- They are also used as current limiting devices.

- Working Principle of the Rheostats
- A rheostat is an electrical device consisting of two metal contacts placed in a resistive element.
- The variable part is a movable contact, also known as slider, which moves across the resistive element as it is being twisted.
- The distance between the two contacts determines the magnitude of the resistance which, in turn, determines the amount of current flowing through them.
- When the slider is moved in one direction, the resistance increases whereas when it is moved in the opposite direction, the resistance decreases.
- The output voltage also changes along with the distance.
- The output voltage is inversely proportional to the distance between the two contacts.
