REG102UA-5/2K5 voltage regulators work by using an integrated circuitry to regulate the input voltage. During this process, a large, current limiting resistor is used to limit the amount of current drawn from the input voltage. Then, a feedback loop setup is used to compare the output voltage with a reference voltage. If there is a difference between these two voltages, then the error amplifier will produce an output signal to the power transistor that depends on the size of the difference. If the output voltage is too low, the power transistor will be triggered to increase the current flowing from the input voltage to the output terminal. In the same way, if the output voltage is too high, the power transistor will be triggered to reduce the current.The power transistor works as a switch to control the amount of current drawn from the input voltage. The current limiting resistor is still present, but its primary benefit is to protect the regulator from excess current, as the power transistor is the main means of current control.
