PTC resettable fuses, or Polymer Positive Temperature Coefficient (PPTC) resettable fuses, provide a reliable solution for protecting and managing power components in a wide range of applications. In order to trip the resettable fuse, the current flowing through the device must exceed the rated current. Once the current exceeds the preset limit, the interior resistance of the fuse element rises, leading to an increase in the temperature within the element. The temperature rise will cause the PPTC element to trip. This trip will cause the fuse to open, which will prevent any further current flow. The RHEF050 features a low resistance in the “on” state and a high resistance in the “off” state. To reset the fuse, the current must be turned off, and the fuse is automatically reset when the over-current condition is removed.

The RHEF050 is designed for use in a variety of applications and is capable of handling an operating temperature range of -40 to +85 °C. The device is available in three different body styles, including axial leads, SMT and DIP, which make it ideal for board-level or a surface-mount assembly. It is also offered in a range of current ratings from 0.500A to 3A, allowing designers to select the right device for their system requirements.
