Rotary Potentiometers, Rheostats, and the RJS50K are all components that are used for measurement and regulation within an electrical circuit. Potentiometers, rheostats and RJS50Ks all rotate within a circuit to adjust variables, depending on the field of application. However, when and where each component is used is determined by their design, structure and working principle.

Rotary Potentiometers

Rotary Potentiometers, also referred to as a "pot" or variable resistor, are most commonly used for adjusting levels of electrical signals. This type of device consists of a simple resistor element connected to a rotating shaft with a contact arm. As the contact arm moves in relation to the resistor element, level of resistance changes, creating a voltage divider or voltage output.

Modern Potentiometers are often integrated into other applications including switches and encoders. They are most commonly used as user input devices, setting reference points and regulating audio frequencies or output. Rotary potentiometers are also used in medical equipment, automotive controls and in manufacturing.

Rheostats

A rheostat (or continuous variable resistor) is similar to the potentiometer, but with a much higher range of resistance. Unlike a potentiometer, a rheostat is meant to provide voltage regulation in a circuit by controlling current through an adjustable resistance. It consists of three terminals connected to a sliding brush, which adjusts the resistance when moved across the fingers of a resistor.

Rheostats are used extensively in electronic circuits for controlling the speed of motors, voltage regulation, current limiter circuits and electronic filters. They can also be used to control light fixtures and heating elements.

RJS50K

The RJS50K is a unique type of rotary device, often referred to as a “non-contact” design. This device offers superior reliability and performance due to the fact that the contact arm is turned through a series of magnets, instead of directly connected to the resistor element. This provides a grid of output values that increase with each rotation.

The RJS50K is most commonly used to control and regulate variable elements within a circuit. This device is ideally suited for applications such as moving fixtures, PLCs and AC/DC drivers. Its simple design and compact size also make it well-suited for automotive and robotic applications.

Working Principle

The working principle of a potentiometer is based on the voltage division principle. This states that the voltage achieved will be equal to the ratio of the resistance per every turn, which is set by the user. For example, if the resistor is set at 12 volts and there are four turns then the voltage output will be 3 volts per turn.

On the other hand, rheostats work by providing an adjustable current in a circuit by increasing or decreasing the resistance level. The resistance is adjusted by the user’s interaction with a sliding brush, which moves across a set of resistors when the knob is turned.

The RJS50K device uses its own unique design working principle, based on contactless technology. This device has 3 primary coils that create a constant magnetic field when it is turned. This magnetized field changes the frequency of the current flow at each turn, creating a grid of output values for the user to control.
