Transient Voltage Surge Suppressors (TVSS), also known as surge protectors, are used to help minimize the amount of damaging lightning and store related energy surges that enter devices and wiring systems. TVSSs are devices designed to suppress overvoltages and limit their effect to the wiring and on the equipment. They are available in a wide variety of styles, sizes, and ratings and are used to suppress surges caused from lightning strikes, equipment switching, and direct contact to higher voltage levels. TVSS technologies include Varistors, Metal Oxide Varistors (MOVs), and Silicon Controlled Rectifiers (SCRs).
Varistors, also known as voltage dependent resistors (VDRs), are semiconductor devices designed for overvoltage protection. Varistors are used in TVSS applications because they attenuate or absorb short-term overvoltages to protect sensitive equipment. When overvoltages appear on a line, the varistor in the TVSS will conduct the current through itself, providing a low-impedance path to ground. The more current passes through the varistor, the more the voltage across it will rise to limit the maximum voltage at the TVSS device.
Metal Oxide Varistors (MOVs) are devices that protect against transient overvoltage. Although they are similar to varistors in functionality, MOVs have several advantages over varistors. MOVs use zinc oxide as its main component instead of silicone, making them more resistant to high temperatures. Also, when MOVs become charged, the resistance of the device increases, allowing for much higher capacitance values and faster response times.
The ROV10-431K-S is a radial leaded Metal Oxide Varistor (MOV) from Bourns that provides overvoltage protection for sensitive equipment. This component is designed to handle surges up to 32A with a maximum let through voltage of 490V. The varistor body is composed of non-flammable material for improved safety and reliability. The ROV10-431K-S varistors are designed for 480VAC line protection, with low capacitance and high peak current ability.
The ROV10-431K-S MOVs are suitable for a wide range of applications including motor applications, high-power equipment, automotive, and telecommunications. In motor applications, these varistors protect the motor from load disturbances by suppressing overvoltages and limiting the effects of the overvoltages. In automotive applications, these varistors protect ECUs and other system components from electrical transients and surges. In telecommunications, the varistors protect telecom equipment from surges and transient voltages.
The working principle of the ROV10-431K-S varistors is the same as that of other MOVs. When an overvoltage or surge is applied to the varistor, the resistance of the MOV varies inversely with the magnitude of the voltage. The varistor\'s resistance reduces as the voltage increases, effectively dissipating the excess energy as heat. This protects the equipment from spikes and transient voltages.
In conclusion, the ROV10-431K-S Metal Oxide Varistor is a versatile device used for overvoltage protection in a wide variety of applications, from motor applications to telecommunications. It has high peak current ability and a low capacitance for fast response times, making it an effective choice for surge protection. The working principle of the MOV is to reduce the resistor value as the voltage increases, dissipating the excess energy as heat and protecting the connected equipment.
