Working principle

The ROV10-470K varistor is composed of a zinc oxide-ceramic matrix. The positive terminal of the varistor is marked with a plus sign and connected to the zinc oxide-ceramic matrix. The minus terminal of the varistor is marked with a minus sign and connected to a ground.

A varistor has a reverse-biased, nonlinear current-voltage (I-V) curve. When a voltage spike or surge is applied, the varistor clamps the voltage across the component and diverts the current away from the sensitive electronics. Ideally, the voltage across the varistor will be limited to its breakdown voltage when it is fully turned on and will clamp the spike voltage at the rated clamping voltage.

A varistor is generally designed for operation within a specified operating frequency range. When the varistor is subjected to a voltage transient above its clamping voltage, it will reduce the amplitude of the voltage transient. In a typical application, the varistor will remain in a fully-on state until the voltage transient decays, allowing the varistor to return to the low-leakage, reverse-biased off state.
