A potential difference is created between the P and N regions and current only flows in a single direction, depending on the polarity of the voltage.

When a voltage lower than the Piv rating is applied, the reverse current flow is zero. This means that the current only flows in the forward direction, thus concerning anode, it has a positive potential difference and cathode has a zero potential difference, vice versa when a voltage higher than the Piv is applied.
