RT5712BHGQW Application Field and Working Principle

RT5712BHGQW is a DC-DC switching regulator belonging to the PMIC-Voltage Regulators family and is designed to deliver low quiescent current, high efficiency and fast transient response for load current up to 3.8A. It offers high switching frequency of 2MHz and is suitable for various designs with multiple output powers from 0.6V to 5.5V.

The quick transient response and high efficiency make it an ideal power supply for applications such as smart home, automotive electronics, medical systems and industrial control. RT5712BHGQW utilizes an analog peak current controlled, voltage mode (APCC-VM) control method. An integrated loop compensator with high-side and low-side switches, optimized loop compensation and other control loopholes can simplify design and reduce size while maintaining overall system efficiency.

Besides, RT5712BHGQW also features leading edge current modulation and enabling soft start. The output voltage accuracy is ±2% over line, load and temperature, and cycle-by-cycle over current protection is provided with programmable current limit, cycle-by-cycle limit and thermal protection. Its tiny, thermally enhanced TSOP5-6L package offers a high power density and makes the RT5712BHGQW ideal for portable applications that needs to save motherboard space.

RT5712BHGQW Basic Working Principle

RT5712BHGQW adopts an APCC-VM control method. The figure below illustrates the basic working principle of the RT5712BHGQW. The input voltage is connected to both the boost diode and the flyback diode, and it is then applied to the power stage MOSFETs. The inductor, catch diode and output capacitors form the power path and provide the power from input voltage to output voltage.

The internal error amplifier (EA) compares the voltage between the input voltage and the error amplifier with the feedback voltage to detect any deviation from the set voltage. The error current generated is compared with critical current and then run across the PWM comparator to generate on-off pulses to the driver that applied to the power stage MOSFET switch. Depending on whether the silicon switch turns on or off, it switches between the boost and flyback mode. The power stage dissipates all losses and provides power to the output, compensates the voltage drop and maintains a regulated output voltage at the load.
