Working Principle

The working principle of a DC-DC switching regulator is based on the switching of a voltage regulator using a transistor. The input voltage is applied to the base of a transistor and it is turned on and off according to the duty cycle of a control signal. This duty cycle is typically applied by a Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) oscillator, which produces a square wave signal with a variable duty cycle between 0% and 100%.

The transistor is turned on and off according to the duty cycle of the oscillator, allowing a small portion of the input voltage to be regulated by the transistor and its associated components. The output voltage of the switching regulator is determined by the size of the output capacitor and the frequency of the control signal. The higher the output capacitor size, the lower the output voltage. The frequency of the control signal determines the ripple voltage of the output voltage.
