The RTD14048 relay is a heavy duty, general purpose power contactor. It is used for controlling power, protecting electrical equipment and circuits. It is designed to switch both AC and DC circuits and has a long service life. This particular model is rated for 1-1/2 horsepower [HP], 9-amps continuous duty at 120V AC, and 6-amps continuous duty at 277V AC.

Application Field and Working Principle

The RTD14048’s primary usage is in motor control applications. It is rated for use in residential and commercial vacuums, motors, pumps, fans and other residential and light industrial applications. The contactor is also capable of switching low voltage (24V DC) circuits, and add an option of using a pilot contact when controlling inductive loads (motors and solenoids).

The RTD14048 uses an electromechanical design to create an on/off operation. The coil is energized to pull in the armature, which closes the contact. When the voltage is interrupted, the spring will open the contacts. The contactor has a pressure wire terminal for easy series connection of two contactors, and can be used to interrupt a large load while another contacts the device.

The RTD14048 is composed of a coil, armature, and contactor, which come together to form the basic components of a power relay. The contactor, or switch component, is made of copper or brass plated electrical steel, and the armature and coil are composed of steel. The contactor is opened and closed by the movement of the armature when the coil is energized. The RTD14048 typically operates on voltages ranging from 24 VAC to 277 VAC. It has two 1/4” quick-connect terminals, allowing for access to power through a circuit or surge protection device. When the contactor is activated, the contacts close, creating a link between the circuit and power source, allowing the electric current to flow.

RTD14048 contactors are designed for a long operational life. They have a thermal cut-out switch that trips the contactor if the current reaches a certain level, protecting the wiring from damage due to too much power draw. The contactors are also electrostatically shielded to reduce radio frequency interference. This shield reduces noise from the contactor so it doesn’t interfere with the communication signals of other electronic equipment.
