PTC resettable fuses are one of the most popular current protection products in the electronics market. They help protect circuits from unwanted currents from surges and spikes. If the current threatening a circuit exceeds the rated values, they will open the circuit, and then reset themselves once the danger is over. The type RUEF090 is an example of a popular resettable fuse.

RUEF090 are designed as self-recovering non-contact-type trigger fuses that are used to protect circuits as well as the electronic components located therein. They are less than 1 inch in height and 0.4 inches in diameter. They are capable of withstanding currents up to 0.9 Amps at a rated voltage of 14 VDC. They are also capable of cutting off currents above 0.9 Amps, thus preventing damage to the circuitry.

RUEF090 fuses have four types of application fields. The first field of application is for short circuit protection, where the PTC resettable fuse quickly cuts off the over-current and then recover by itself, thus preventing further damage. The second field of application is for over-voltage protection, where the PTC resettable fuse can withstand the high voltage and will not be permanently damaged. The third field of application is for soft start and over-current protection in automotive electronics, where the PTC resettable fuse cuts off the over-current to protect the electronic components in the circuit while recovering after the current drops back to normal. The fourth field of application is for the micro-controller protection, where the PTC resettable fuse will prevent the circuitry from getting damaged due to the over-current and provide the micro-controller with the necessary time to reboot or reset itself.

RUEF090’s working principle is based on a simple heating and cooling process. This type of fuse contains a temperature-sensitive material which will heat up when the current passing through it exceeds the rated value. This implementation allows for an internal heating process which causes the temperature-sensitive material to melt, thus breaking the electrical contact and cutting off the high current. After the current drops back to the normal level, the temperature-sensitive material will cool down again, and the fuse will automatically recover and reset itself.

RUEF090 resettable fuses are widely used for short circuit and over-current protection in many electronic devices like chargers, DC converters, power supplies, and computer peripherals. They are also used in automotive and other types of equipment.
