PTC Resettable Fuses
PTC Resettable Fuses, also known as Polymeric Positive Temperature Coefficient (PPTC) resettable fuses or Polyswitch, are single-use, non-resettable overcurrent protection devices characterized by a progressive increase in resistance when the device is subjected to an overcurrent, consequently slowing and limiting the current flow. PTC resettable fuses come in various shapes, sizes, and ratings, and they are typically used in a wide range of product designs to protect from transient faults, such as lightning.
RXEF050-2 Application Field and Working Principle
RXEF050-2 is a series of Polymer Positive Temperature Coefficient, or PPTC, resettable fuse designed by Littelfuse. It is often used in industrial electronic equipment, consumer electronic applications, automotive electronics applications, communications and networks, and many other applications. It features a 0.050 A hold current rating and a 0.100 A trip current rating, and is available in radial leaded, surface-mount, and through-hole styles.
The RXEF050-2\'s PPTC feature is a unique property of the device. It consists of two thin layers of conductive polymer housed between two electrodes. The conductive polymer has a positive temperature coefficient, meaning that when the current passing through it increases, its resistance and heat generated increase proportionally. When the current reaches the trip level, the resistance rises quickly and the heat generated melts the battery contacts resulting in an open circuit. The resistance of the PPTC will then remain at a very high level until the current going through it is decreased. Once the current is lowered, the battery contacts reform and the circuit is open corrected.
The RXEF050-2, which has a 0.050 A hold current rating and 0.100 A trip current rating, is often used in high-power applications to prevent overcurrent from occurring. This is done by limiting the amount of current allowed to flow through the device. When the current flowing through the RXEF050-2 exceeds its preset level, the resistance in the device will quickly increase resulting in an open circuit state. This allows for a quick recovery once the overcurrent condition is removed. Thanks to its PPTC feature, the RXEF050-2 is also capable of resetting itself after the overcurrent state is removed. Furthermore, the RXEF050-2 is also designed to be disconected from the circuit during an overcurrent condition, so it will not damage or interfere with other components in the circuit.
