Single diodes, also known as rectifiers, are electronic devices composed of two different semiconductor layers connected to two terminals. Constructed in either a two-terminal or three-terminal configuration, the devices’ purpose is to control the flow of electrons using a small voltage or current. A single diode can be used for many purposes, but is commonly used as a protective measure to regulate high voltage, as a rectification switch, and as a power converter.
Single diode rectifier MHG (Multi Hexadegradable Geometry) is a single diode rectifier that is much smaller compared to traditional rectifiers due to its Multi Hexadegradable geometry structure. The MHG structure is designed with six active layers and two identical side layers joined together in one device. By using this structure, MHG reduces the space required for a single diode rectifier by nearly 85%. The MHG structure also increases the forward current rating of the diode by as much as 25%.
MHG rectifiers are highly efficient and durable, making them ideal for numerous applications. Examples of applications that require high current and voltage switching include power supplies, dc-ac converters, battery chargers, automotive electronics, and renewable energy systems. Their ability to perform in higher temperatures makes them suitable for use in high-power amplifiers, motor controls, and other applications that require a high degree of heat resistance. These rectifiers can also endure frequent switching, making them perfect for use in power modules, switching regulators, and high-voltage inverters.
The working principle of an MHG rectifier is relatively simple. Using a reverse bias voltage, electrons are forced to stop blocking at the P-N junction. A voltage injection method is used to provide a high current, allowing current to flow in the forward direction. In other words, the electrons are attracted to the N-type material, and move toward the P-type material creating a high current. During this process, the rectifier is able to convert high voltage and current from an AC source into a DC source.
Finally, the MHG single diode rectifier offers a number of benefits. These include smaller size, higher efficiency, and a higher operating temperature range. In addition to these benefits, the MHG’s geometry structure allows for higher current rating, stable performance, and reduced power loss. This makes the MHG an ideal device for power conversion and control applications requiring high voltage and current.
