S1RP stands for Self-Organizing Time Division Multiple Access (S-TDMA). It is an IEEE 802.15.4-2015 compliant protocol, designed to provide a secure, reliable and low latency communications for wireless applications; popularized by its compatibility with ZigBee and 6LoWPAN and its modularization for greater flexibility. It utilizes a distributed algorithm inspired by self-organizing media access control (MAC) methods that distributes radio duty cycles and radio channel allotment between sensor nodes in a self-organizing network topology. This paper covers detailed information on the working principles and use cases of S1RP. S1RP enables the secure, reliable and low latency communications for wireless applications using frequency hopping spread spectrum. It helps sense the environment surrounding a device by spreading the signal across multiple channels and provides enhanced performance in high interference scenarios. The S1RP physical layer modulates the signal in the 2.4GHz ISM band by hopping between available channels. It utilizes the Node-Channel establishment and Contention Access Periods (CAPs) to initiate periodic and synchronous communications in-between different devices. The operation of S1RP networking protocols is based on a distributed algorithm, referred to as Self-organizing Time Division Multiple Access (S-TDMA). It requires nodes to dynamically advertise their radio availability and synchronize themselves to allocate and reassign radio duty cycle and channel resources. After an initial exchange of information the S-TDMA algorithm is used to form the S1RP network tree which is an optimized connectivity model based on the quality of signal and the number of hops that nodes need to take for reaching other nodes. This model is used to establish an efficient communication link with a parent node which is the primary connection over which nodes exchange data. The S1RP network tree provides a secure communication link, protecting the information exchange from eavesdropping by strangers. It is also used to relay messages between nodes most efficiently; improving the quality of service for wireless applications. The S1RP protocol relies on the following parameters in order to control and regulate the network node configurations: • Radio duty cycle: Sets the minimum and maximum amount of time allocated to a node for communicating with its parent or other nodes. • Data rate: Controls the transmission speed of the node by setting the highest and lowest rates at which the node can communicate.• Network size: Sets the maximum number of nodes that can join the network at the same time. The S1RP protocol is most advantageous when applied to large-scale networks of resources that have to share resources such as sensors, actuators or robots. Its ability to adapt to communication needs as well as environmental conditions, such as interference and signal strength, improves the response time of data transfer from the nodes to the web-controller and decreases energy consumption and delays. In conclusion, the S1RP is a flexible and secure protocol that serves optimization of communication networks, ensuring reliable and low latency communication. Its distributed structure allows nodes to share resources in an organized manner and dynamically adjusts to changes in the environment.
