Thyristors are solid state devices that act like a two stage electrical switch to control power. One of the most commonly used type of Thyristor is called “SCR” or Silicon Controlled Rectifier. The S2040NRP is a four-quadrant, non-isolated, programmable, SCR-based thyristor power controller, used for controlling DC power from a single power source. It has been designed to provide efficient, accurate and reliable control of motors, heating elements and other applications where DC power is needed.

S2040NRP Application Field

The S2040NRP is an efficient power controller that is suitable for a wide range of applications, such as motor control in industrial and commercial applications, heater control and other applications that use DC power. The device is capable of controlling load currents up to 16 amps and offers overload protection, adjustable voltage, current and temperature ranges, zero-crossing function, overvoltage protection and many other user configurable settings.

In addition to its standard functionality, the S2040NRP is highly configurable and easy to integrate into existing systems with its open source software platform that can be programmed via an intuitive user interface. This makes the S2040NRP an ideal power controller for OEMs who need a high performance but cost-effective device.

S2040NRP Working Principle

The S2040NRP works on the principle of a two-quadrant, non-isolated, SCR-based thyristor power controller. A thyristor is composed of four semiconductor p-n junctions connected in a bridge configuration, as shown in Figure 1. The thyristor conducts current through both its anode and cathode terminals when the "gate" terminal is pulsed above its gate threshold voltage. When the gate voltage is removed, the thyristor turns off, interrupting the current flow.

The S2040NRP utilizes thyristors to control current flow in two quadrants. It takes two input signals for each quadrant. The first input signal is the voltage sense voltage (V1). This signal is used to determine the voltage value of the anode of the transistor which is used to control the current flow. The second input signal is the current sense (I1). This signal determines the current value of the anode of the transistor which is used to control the current flow.

Once the S2040NRP has determined the proper values for the voltage and current, it will begin controlling the current flow through the transistor. By varying the amount of gate voltage applied, it can control the current flow in both directions. It can also control the load current to a predetermined setpoint by monitoring and controlling the voltage and current levels. This helps to maintain the desired load current even when the load changes.

In addition to its standard functionality, the S2040NRP is highly configurable and easy to integrate into existing systems with its open source software platform that can be programmed via an intuitive user interface. This makes the S2040NRP an ideal power controller for OEMs who need a high performance but cost-effective device.
