Thyristors - SCRsA thyristor is a semiconductor device that is characterized by three electrodes, whereby its structure is formed by two alternate layers of N-type and P-type semiconductor materials, forming two PN junctions. A thyristor can be used as a switch so it can conduct or block the electric current path, depending on the applied voltage or current. In this case, the S402TSRP is a four-layer silicon control rectifier (SCR), and it is of the type 875. SCRs, or as they are also known, silicon controlled switches, are a type of thyristor in which the current can be blocked or conducted. The S402TSRP SCR is gated, meaning that when an adequate amount of current runs through the "gate" of the SCR, conducting current through the device can be triggered.The main application of S402TSRP is motor control because it is ideal for switching systems in electric drives. Moreover, it is also suitable for intermittent control in industrial heating.Now let’s get into the workings of the S402TSRP. Firstly, during an AC cycle, the anode voltage is greater than the cathode voltage and start increasing as the anode voltage increases and the gate will resist providing gate current until it reaches reaching the firing point successfully. Once it reaches that point, the thyristor is turned "on". Next, the gate current is provided, consequently releasing the voltage stored in the gate and allowing fixed gate current to flow. This current will raise the voltage between anode and gate, surpassing the voltage between cathode and gate. As a result, current is passed from anode to cathode.Eventually, the thyristor leaves in the same mode it has been turned on. As anode and cathode voltage change relatively with respect to each other through the AC cycle, the stored gate current tends to enter the gate and, as a consequence, the current flowing between anode and cathode is blocked. The thyristor is turned “off”.The S402TSRP case therefore consists of the protection of motors against sub cycles, management of one-way DC current in incoming power systems, as well as intermittent control in industrial heating systems.
