As members of the diode family, the S40G type rectifiers, also known as Schottky Barrier Rectifiers, are a form of single diode with a low forward voltage drop. They are considered a ’surface-barrier’ form of rectifier and their use offers marked advantages in speed and switching efficiency.
S40G rectifiers are used in many applications where their helpful characteristics are of most relevance, primarily to low voltage and low power supply systems such as switch mode power supplies and voltage regulation circuits. They are known for their fast switching speed and low power loss, consuming 10 times less current than comparable silicon power rectifiers.
S40G rectifiers have a small body size and operate with a low level of noise and heat. As the voltage drop across the diode is relatively small (0.2V-0.3V max at 5A current level) compared with larger silicon rectifiers, this improves efficiency and current levels in power supplies.
In terms of working principle, S40G rectifiers are based on the P-N junction of a silicon semiconductor combined with a metal layer located near the junction. This creates an electric field which can be considered a special type of diode which offers many benefits.
When a direct current (DC) is applied across the circuit, the Schottky diode operates by allowing current to flow when the applied voltage is larger than the barrier voltage, allowing current to flow in the form of a forward bias or direct current. When the applied voltage is lower than the barrier voltage, current is blocked from flowing.
The design of S40G rectifiers also allows for very fast switching speeds as the average forward recovery time (trr) needed for the switching process is significantly lower than competing rectifiers, adding to the efficiency of the product.
