Thyristors commonly called as Silicon Controlled Rectifiers (SCRs) are semiconductor components that have three terminals named as Anode, Cathode and Gate. SCRs act as electric switches that are capable of controlling high power. SCRs are unidirectional devices, thereby allowing current to flow only in a single direction. They are mainly utilized for power conversion and control, mainly in AC circuits. With the development of technology, SCRs of different sizes are now available ranging from very small packages, perfect for wide range of applications like small signal amplifiers from 70 to 200 V to large packages, which are used for heavy power control circuits.

S4SRP is an abbreviation for Silent Softly Switched, Reverse-Phase Control. It is an efficient thyristor-based artificial power factor compensation controller. The application field of S4SRP includes AC motors, variable speed drives, welding machines, Thyristor AC Drives, and pump control units. S4SRP is suitable for all types of Reverse Phase Control applications, especially in high power systems. The working principle of S4SRP is based on the control of the phase of current delivered to the load in order to reduce reactive power and prevent damage to the motor.

The S4SRP controller in the basic version comprises of a phase angle and zero current detection circuit, an RMS voltage measurement circuit, an IGBT driver circuit, and an industrial grade microcontroller based control circuit. The microcontroller based control circuit is used for implementing reverse phase control, as well as for current limit control and selection of different modes such as direct or reverse phase control or both. The S4SRP controller can provide power factor compensations even in poor quality electricity networks or in cases of high harmonics.

S4SRP device utilises four thyristors in order to reduce switching losses and noise. After detecting the voltage and current signal information, the microcontroller based control circuit calculates the phase angle difference and conducts the reverse phase angle Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) control. The load current is controlled by the thyristors using four reverse phase angle PWM pulses. In this operation, the current waveform gets matched to the voltage waveform, allowing reduction of current with time and recovery of the input power factor and harmonic waveforms.

The S4SRP Control Electronics have been designed to reduce the effect of the load parameters on the reverse phase angle control. The Control Electronics can detect the phase angle at all the load levels. This phase and current sensing device works in conjunction with the four thyristor switches to effectively control the waveforms. During the initial phase of the current waveform, the current waveform is initially detected. This is followed by the application of the four thyristor forward and reverse phase angle control signals. As the phase angle changes, the thyristor firing signals are adjusted. For higher currents, the thyristors are made to conduct for the entire duration of the waveform. Through the application of this reverse phase angle control, power factor compensation is achieved.

Because of its ability to control the power factor and to reduce harmonic waveforms, the S4SRP is becoming increasingly popular in industrial applications. The benefits of using the S4SRP are clearly seen in terms of reduced power loss, improved power quality, and more efficient operation. The S4SRP is also highly reliable and provides flexible control of the AC motor, making it an ideal choice for industrial motor control applications.
