Thyristors are solid-state electronic components that, like transistors, act as electrically controlled switches. Compared to transistors, they have the advantage of being able to switch large amounts of power. One of the most common types of thyristors is the silicon-controlled rectifier (SCR), typically referred to by its acronym and also known as a thyristor. The S6X8BSRP (silicon-controlled rectifier series 6X8BSRP) is a type of SCR.
The S6X8BSRP, and similar SCRs, contain four layers of alternating N-type and P-type silicon material. This arrangement is known as a “PNPN” structure and is essential for the SCR\'s functionality. The device will only switch on when both the anode and cathode are forward-biased, and when the gate receives a pulse of current of sufficient magnitude to trigger the device.
The S6X8BSRP is a three-terminal device with a maximum operating voltage rated at 600V. In this type of application, the SCR can be used as a timer since the time delay is proportional to the magnitude of the triggering pulse.
