S70Y is a single rectifier diode suitable for power rectification, which can produce high di/dt to ensure perfect working performance between high frequency and low frequency. In general, it consists of one p-n junction with the n-side contacting the anode and the p-side contacting the cathode. This diode can have a forward voltage up to 800V and a reverse voltage up to 250V.
S70Y is widely used for applications such as rectifying ac power, voltage doubling, power factor correction, and motor speed control. It is ideal for switch-mode power supplies and uninterruptible power supplies, as well as automotive components and circuit boards. Its built-in fringing fields provide improved voltage withstand ability.
In terms of working principle, the S70Y rectifier diode allows electric current to flow in one direction, but impedes it in the opposite direction. When connected in a circuit, it allows current to go through it in one direction when the voltage is applied in the opposite direction. The diode has a positive resistance in one direction and a negative resistance in the opposite direction. This is known as the “reverse-bias” operation.
The current flow through the S70Y is determined by the voltage applied across the terminals. In rectifier applications, the voltage is typically sinusoidal, and the current will always lag behind the voltage. However, if the voltage is suddenly dropped or reversed, the current immediately halts. The reverse-bias condition is necessary to ensure successful operation of the diode.
The current-voltage behavior of a diode is non-linear and is determined by the doping concentration of the materials used. A higher doping concentration will result in a lower voltage drop in the forward-bias direction. The reverse-bias may exhibit higher voltage drop. Reverse-bias blocking voltage is generally reported in the datasheet and is used to distinguish between various types of diodes.
