S7812W Application Field and Working Principle

S7812W is an integrated 8-channel driver and output level shifter from Allegro MicroSystems. It is mean for driving applications requiring high current such as motor control, light control, and brushless DC fans. It is also suitable for other purposes in industrial, automotive, consumer, and home appliance applications.

The S7812W contains eight outputs and is designed for driving LEDs, relays, and DC motors. Each output consists of an independent N-channel power MOSFET driver, level shift regulator, power control and protection circuit, high-side MOSFET (HSMOS) and a low-side MOSFET (LSMOS). The level shift regulator provides a minimum voltage drop between its input and output for an improved power efficiency. The power control and protection circuit protects the MOSFET from too much voltage or current, and prevents overcurrent or thermal damage.

The S7812W is designed with a pin-compatible logic interface that is compatible with 2.5 V/3.3 V/5 V logic signal input levels. This can be further enhanced with the Gate Driver Protection Option (GDPO, selectable by the user) that provides higher level protection of the driver inputs from higher potentials that may be present in automotive applications. With the usage of the GDPO, the power switches can be disabled by driving the two control pins (GDPO_EN) from the power source high/low instead of using a separate level shifter.

The S7812W includes features useful for both normal and emergency control of the outputs. Output voltage control, thermal shutdown, and fault indication are also provided.

Each output consists of an independent N-channel power MOSFET with an integrated level shift regulator, an HSMOS for high-side use, and a low-side MOSFET (LSMOS) for easier decoupling to ground. The N-channel power MOSFETs have a wide range of potential applications including motor control, light control, and brushless DC fans. The level shift regulator also improves power efficiency by providing a minimum voltage drop between the input and output. In addition, power control and protection circuits are included to protect the MOSFET from too much voltage or current, and prevent overcurrent or thermal damage.

The S7812W further integrates several features such as short-circuit detection, thermal shutdown, and fault indication.
