The S8219BS is an integrated circuit that provides a wide range of protection functions in circuit applications involving direct current (DC) or alternating current (AC) where overvoltage protection is necessary. It is a low power, single-supply, fault-admitted overvoltage protection (OVP) IC that is designed to protect non-isolated DC/DC converters and AC/DC adapters from overvoltage related faults. The S8219BS is based on an SCR (silicon-controlled rectifier) protection device to protect circuits against overvoltage faults with a response time below 1ms. The OVP IC has two main applications, which are linear and switch mode power supplies (SMPS) circuit protection.

The linear power supply circuit protection comprises protection circuits for the three basic topologies of linear power supplies which includes buck, boost, and buck-boost. It helps keep the output within a specified range, both at low voltages and during charge injection because of excessive loading or other faults. In the SMPS circuits, it is used to provide overvoltage protection to primary side circuitry. Its linear functionality is further supported by the integrated hysteresis feature, so that the output of the circuit is maintained in the right range even if the input is varying or fluctuating.

The main principle that makes the S8219BS tick is its two-stage OVP protection with voltage sensing. This is used to sense and respond to any overvoltage conditions in the circuit with an SCR driver. The device has two ANODE outputs that are triggered at different voltage levels, depending on the application. When the voltage climbs above a certain threshold — the trip level — the SCR output will be triggered. The trip level is determined based on the application settings.

Once the triggered ANODE output is switched on, the current in the circuit is clamped at 50uA maximum. This effectively limits the amount of current passing through, protecting the circuit from overvoltage related faults. The device also has a cathode output which is activated via a P-channel MOSFET switch. The switch is deployed upon the detection of an overvoltage situation, shutting off the current flow over the circuit.

The S8219BS device is designed to be integrated into existing circuits thanks to its small size (7.6mm x 6.1mm). Its low power consumption also makes it suitable for battery powered applications. The device has an operating voltage range from 6.5V to 18V, and is certified for voltage protection up to 18V. It has a high reliability with a long-term failure rate of less than 1% up to 85 degrees Celsius and a dielectric withstand voltage up to 15KV.
