TVS - Diodes are one of the most important components when it comes to electrical engineering. These gate-controlled diodes are used for a range of applications, such as protecting circuit from high voltage and electrostatic discharge (ESD). The PN-type elements are connected between the positive and negative terminals, and the two N-type elements are connected between the gate and the negative terminal of the device. This acts as a bidirectional voltage clamp.The four elements of the SA180 are a cathode, anode, gate, and substrate. The anode is the terminal connected to the P-type semiconductor material of the device and the cathode is also connected to the P-type material but is outside of the device, connecting to a load. The gate is connected to the N-type semiconductor materials of the device which, when sufficiently positive, will turn the device off and prevent current flow. The substrate is connected to the negative terminal of the device, which allows current to flow when the gate is sufficiently positive.When the applied voltage is below the breakdown voltage, the SA180 will not conduct since the N-type elements prevent the flow of current. When the voltage applied to the gate above the breakdown voltage, the device will rapidly switch to an on-state and clamp the voltage between its positive and negative terminals, thereby dissipating excessive energy while preventing other parts of the circuit from damage.SA180 Application Field and Working Principle not only provides an effective high voltage transient protection but also has low power requirements and an automatic self-reset circuit. Due to its low power requirements, the SA180 can be used in both AC and DC circuits, allowing for a wide variety of applications.
