TVS (transient voltage suppressor) diodes are specialized diodes used to protect circuits from mis-operation due to external electrical disturbances, like voltage surges or electrical transients. As this clamping voltage approaches the breakdown voltage the diode will increase its current conduction, dissipating the energy of the transient and clamping the voltage down to the breakdown voltage.

As well as providing excellent protection from electrical transients, the SA24–E3/54 has a very low reverse leakage current, giving it excellent thermal stability. This thermal stability ensures that the voltage clamping characteristics of the diode remain consistent even when the temperature changes.
