The silicon substrate will become depleted which then creates a depletion region which means that an electric field is created between the two terminals. When the electric potential difference is high enough the electrons become accelerated to the point where they have enough energy to gain at least another electron out of the atom of silicon.

The electrons which are accelerated create ionization within the ionization zone and impact ions are created along with the electrons. These newly created ions will immediately become a part of the electron and electron-hole pairs which have enough energy to drift through the depletion region. This effect causes the voltage of the diode to suddenly increase and this is the point when the avalanche breakdown occurs.

When the avalanche breakdown effect occurs, it causes a large amount of current to flow which then causes the voltage to drop to its breakdown value.The avalanche breakdown voltage specification for the SA36CAHR0G is 170V and the pulse handling specification is 1.5kW.The SA36CAHR0G is a powerful device and offers excellent protection against voltage transients which prevents circuits from being damaged due to overvoltage.
