Transient Voltage Suppressors (TVSs) have been widely used in multiple industries to protect induced electronic components from transient overvoltage and power surge damages. SA8.0C is a specially designed TVS diode that offers excellent transient protection and is very popular for its reliable performance and robust construction.
The structure of the SA8.0C TVS diode is composed of three components: the active anode, the cathode, and the cathode. The active anode and cathode are made of high-purity, high-resistivity silicon materials. Both endpieces of the SA8.0C are connected to the anode and cathode of the silicon structure, which is the foundation of the device. The main purpose of the SA8.0C is to protect sensitive electronics or semiconductor materials from the surge of transient voltages.
The SA8.0C provides a high protection level against transient voltages while offering low clamping voltage and low leakage current. The device offers an excellent balance between breakdown voltage (BV) and clamping voltage (CV). The positive operating characteristic of the SA8.0C ensures that the junction voltage stays below the breakdown voltage, which in turn limits the current and dissipates the energy.
The working principle of the SA8.0C is similar to that of any other TVS diode. It has two functions: to clamp, or conduct, transient current, and to provide a low impedance path.
When a transients voltage appears at the anode of the SA8.0C, the diode will immediately conduct and forward biase the junction, meaning that the PN junction voltage will be higher than the turn-on voltage. As current continues to flow, the PN junction voltage will remain above the breakdown voltage and this maintains the current below the specified values. Any energy stored in the device will be dissipated in the form of heat due to the low impedance.
The SA8.0C is designed to provide a wide range of circuit protection from overvoltage occurrences and fast transients in both AC and DC circuits. It is suitable for a variety of applications including automotive, consumer, industrial, medical, and telecommunications. The device typically provides a low capacitance (less than 1pF) and is suitable for high-speed data line protection. Additionally, it is used in circuits that require a low clamping voltage as well as superior ESD protection.
