Temperature Sensors - RTD (Resistance Temperature Detector)
RTD’s (Resistance Temperature Detectors) are among the most accurate temperature sensors available, offering a temperature range from –50 to 600°C. The SB0920 RTD is designed to give electrical engineers greater control of their designs for diverse applications, including industrial control, automotive, medical, and consumer electronics.
The SB0920 is a complete RTD sensing solution in a very small 3 mm x 3 mm SIP package. It includes an integrated analog front end with temperature conversion circuitry, integrated EEPROM memory, and an I2C communication interface. It is designed to provide accurate temperature readings in the presence of external electromagnetic interference and spurious noise.
The SB0920 operates by measuring the resistance value of an RTD and converting it to a temperature value. The resistance – temperature relationship for an RTD can be described as a quadratic curve, meaning that the resistance is not linearly proportional to temperature. Therefore, the RTD requires special circuitry to accurately convert its resistance to a temperature. The SB0920 utilizes a 3rd order polynomial conversion algorithm. This algorithm is able to accurately convert the resistance value of the RTD to a temperature with a very small temperature error (~0.25°C).
The SB0920 also features integrated EEPROM memory that stores calibration data and other user settings. This EEPROM can be programmed with 30 user-defined temperature settings. These can be used in applications that require temperature monitoring or control, such as controlling the fan speed of a computer to regulate the temperature of the CPU.
The device also has an I2C communication interface, which allows the user to quickly and easily access the device’s data. This means that the user does not have to manually program the device or manually read the data. The data can be accessed from a microcontroller or any other controller that can communicate with I2C.
The SB0920 is a highly versatile temperature sensor that is suitable for a wide variety of applications.
