Diodes are an integral part of almost every electronic circuit. A diode is an electronic component that allows electric current to flow in only one direction. Single diodes are a single two-terminal device, made up of an anode and a cathode. Rectifiers are diodes designed specifically for use in power supplies.

SB230-E3/54 is a single-phase, commercial grade, 600V, glass-passivated rectifier. It is a high power rectifier and consists of one common anode and four common cathode.

Application

The SB230-E3/54 is mainly used for rectification of ac signals in power supplies and also for controlling DC voltage levels. It is used for power factor correction, harmonic filtering and energy storage. It is also used as an alternative to transformer-based power conversion solutions.

Working principle

SB230-E3/54 rectifiers work on the principle of the pn-junction diode. When ac voltage is applied to the anode, it creates a junction with the cathode and the reverse voltage across the diode rapidly drops and current flows through it.

When forward voltage is applied, the diode conducts and charge is stored across it. On positive half cycle of the AC voltage, the diode conducts and current flows through the device, while on the negative half cycle, the diode blocks current.

In SB230-E3/54, four separate diodes are connected to a common cathode such that any one or two diodes can be used for rectification. It is mainly used for single phase applications, where one diode can be used for rectification.
