SB380 is a popular diode for rectifying single phase AC power. It is used in a variety of applications that involve rectifying, or converting AC power to DC power. This is done by using the diode’s ability to allow current to flow in one direction while blocking current in the opposite direction. This makes SB380 ideal for applications such as power supplies, protection diodes, DC motors, high voltage diodes, bridge rectifiers, power amplifiers, automotive ignition systems, and more.

The working principle of the SB380 is based on the physical fact that electrical current is able to flow in two directions: positive and negative. When an AC power source is applied to the diode, the diode can be used to selectively allow current to flow in one direction and block current in the opposite direction. This is accomplished by the junction of the P-type and N-type material that makes up the semiconductor material.

When a positive voltage is applied to the input of an SB380, the P-type material is "forward biased". This causes the current to flow from the input of the diode to the output. However, when a negative voltage is applied to the input, the P-type material is "reverse biased". This causes current to not be able to flow from the input to the output.

In addition to its use as a single phase rectifier, the SB380 is commonly used as a bridge rectifier. A bridge rectifier is a device that allows a two phase AC power source to be converted to a DC power source. This is accomplished by using four SB380s arranged in a bridge configuration.

In the bridge configuration, two SB380s are arranged to allow positive current flow and two SB380s are arranged to allow negative current flow. The overall result is that current is able to flow in either direction, but is blocked from flowing in the opposite direction. Therefore, when a two phase AC power source is applied to the bridge rectifier, the result is DC power.
