Film capacitors, or film dielectric capacitors, are passive components used in electronics that store electric charge in an electric field. They consist of two electrical conductors separated by a dielectric material, or an insulator, in which electrical charge is stored. A film capacitor is capable of holding much higher energy per unit volume (electrical capacitance) when compared to other types of capacitors, such as ceramic capacitors and electrolytic capacitors. The SCRN229R is a polarized, aluminum-and-polyamide-film capacitor that is widely used in consumer electronics for various applications.

The SCRN229R film capacitor is built on a rolled, anodized aluminum can with a molded-polyamide top. The housing is filled with oil to protect and help stabilize the capacitor. An internal carbon-impregnated paper layer serves as the dielectric, and two metalized aluminum windings (acting as electrodes) are wrapped around it. This construction provides the capacitor with a long-term stable capacitance rating, low loss and good reliability. It also makes the capacitor RoHS-compliant, meaning it is free from hazardous substances such as lead and cadmium.
