Film capacitors, also known as plastic film capacitors, are capacitors that use paper, polyester, polycarbonate, polypropylene or other flexible dielectric materials as electrodes rather than heavier, rigid material such as mica, ceramics, or aluminum. The SCRN246R, in particular, is a radial leaded Metallized Polycarbonate Film Capacitor with a non-inductive winding structure that functions as a reliable, high voltage capacitor within a wide operating temperature range. This versatile product is ideal for applications such as AC motor starting, lighting and as a DC capacitor for electronic components.

The SCRN246R has three main components; a dielectric film, two etched metal electrodes and a metal case. The pressure sensitive adhesive film is extruded around the outside of the case and functions as an electrical insulator, preventing electrical current from traveling through the insulation. The two metal electrodes are then etched onto either side of the dielectric film. These electrodes are made of a combination of copper and tin which makes them highly conductive and durable.

The first layer of the capacitor is the dielectric film which serves as the insulating barrier between the two short circuits. The dielectric material used for the SCRN246R is polycarbonate, which has a high dielectric strength for any given thickness as well as excellent mechanical properties such as heat and cold tolerance. This allows the capacitor to remain stable and reliable at high temperatures and prevents electrical shorting even when exposed to extreme environmental conditions. The dielectric material is produced by an extrusion process that guarantees the quality and reliability of the capacitor.

The second layer of the capacitor is the two etched electrodes. The metal electrodes used for the SCRN246R are tin-clad copper which provides superior conductivity and mechanical strength.
