SD103AWS-G3-08

SD103AWS-G3-08 is a rectifier diode, part of a family of diodes used as power semiconductor devices, typically with voltage and current ratings exceeding 1kV, and are often referred to as high voltage diodes. It is available in two packages, SMA (Small Outline Type) and SOT-223 (Surface-mount Optimized Transistor Outline), the former having a superior heat dissipation and the later having a slim and compact size, making it ideal for space-constrained applications.

The SD103AWS-G3-08 is a single-phase silicon rectifier, designed for use in high-frequency switch-mode power supplies. It is also suitable in electric vehicle chargers, motor drives, UPS systems and general rectification applications. It has a maximum continuous reverse voltage of 800V, a practical surge forward current of 35A, and a maximum junctioncapacitance of 5pF.

Its operation relies on the flow of charge carriers (electrons and holes) driven by a potential difference between two points. The direct flow of electrons or lack thereof is then used to control electrical energy, wherein the SD103AWS-G3-08 performs the job of polarizing the current for this purpose. The rectifier diodes are so named because of their ability to “rectify” an alternating current (AC) from an external current source, allowing only unidirectional passage of current, and thereby allowing the desired flow of electrons.

The SD103AWS-G3-08 rectifier also belongs to the Schottky diode family, and thus comes with faster switching speeds, low switching losses and a lower forward voltage drop. This facilitates higher efficiencies and makes the device suitable for high-frequency applications.

The SD103AWS-G3-08 rectifier is manufactured using gold, aluminium, germanium and silicon substrates to provide integrated devices that are better diodes with a much lower forward voltage, while also doubling as a voltage regulator. Its integrated capacitance reduces circuit noise, allowing improved RF filtering and increased operating temperature, as well as allowing operation with very high frequency switching.

The device only occupies a few hundredths of an inch in area, but its robust architecture allows for sustained solid-state stability at power levels up to 35A, providing a reliable and efficient solution for many applications in the wireless and automotive industries, as well as in general electronic systems.
