Thermal Cutoffs, commonly referred to as Thermal Fuses, are electronic components designed to open a circuit if the temperature reaches a preset level. They are used in a variety of applications from safety-critical motor and generator controls to consumer applications, such as hairdryers, irons, dishwashers, and washing machines.
DF104S is a Thermal Cutoff type which is popularly used in some new products nowadays. It has several advantages: adjustable kelvin ratings, low voltage (6V-12V), high current transfer capacity (up to 0.5A). Its unique property is that it can shut off at a predetermined temperature and can be reset back to operating temperature after the temperature has cooled off.
DF104S’s application field varies and generally consists of products with safety purpose, such as : mobile electronic device, LED lighting fixtures, home appliances, electric vehicle, medical equipment, industrial automation, intelligent traffic system and etc. Working principle of DF104S is simple. First, when power is applied, the current flows through a thermistor in the thermal element. During the normal operation the temperature of the Thermal Cutoff is kept below the preset shut-off temperature yet above the reset temperature. However, when the temperature reaches the shut-off temperature, the Thermal Cutoff opens the circuit, disconnecting the power from the device.
