SG137T Application Field and Working Principle

SG137T is a linear voltage regulator in the Power Management Integrated Circuit (PMIC) family of voltage regulators. It is designed for use in low-power circuits and is capable of providing excellent performance and reliability. Its main application is in low-voltage and low power applications such as to power flash memory, microcontrollers and other Integrated Circuits (ICs) that require low input voltages to function properly.

Working Principle

The SG137T can provide both constant voltage and current regulation at the output through its output voltage and current settings. It uses a negative temperature coefficient (NTC) voltage reference to provide stable output voltage. The output from the reference is provided to one terminal of the internal transistors and to the output feedback divider. When the output voltages is below the desired value sensed by the voltage feedback divider, the output of the reference will increase and turn on the internal transistor more and cause a rise in output voltage. In the same manner, when the output voltage is above the desired value, the reference voltage will decrease the turn on of the internal transistor resulting in the reduction of output voltage. This process is known as PWM (pulse-width modulation) which is essential in providing excellent regulation.

The SG137T also provides excellent current limiting protection which activates at the maximum specified current. The current limiting is sensed by an internal resistor divider where the voltage across is fed to an internal comparator. When the voltage exceeds the desired value, the current limiting is activated and the maximum current is limited by shunting the current away from the output. This prevents damage to the circuit, thus providing reliable and safe operation.
