1. Describe

The SI1153-AA00-GMR is an ambient light sensor, proximity, and gesture detector with I2C digital interface and programmable-event interrupt output. This touchless sensor IC includes dual 23-bit analog-to-digital converters, an integrated high-sensitivity array of visible and infrared photodiodes, a digital signal processor, and up to three integrated LED drivers with programmable drive levels. The SI1153-AA00-GMR offers excellent performance under a wide dynamic range and a variety of light sources, including direct sunlight. The Si115x can also work under dark glass covers. The photodiode response and associated digital conversion circuitry provide excellent immunity to artificial light flicker noise and natural light flutter noise. With two or more LEDs, the SI1153-AA00-GMR is capable of supporting multiple-axis proximity motion detection. The Si115x is provided in a 10-lead 2x2 mm DFN package or in a 10-lead 2.9x4.9 mm LGA module with integrated LED, and is capable of operation from 1.62 to 3.6 V over the –40 to +85 °C temperature range.

6. Functional Description

The SI1153-AA00-GMR is an active optical reflectance proximity detector, with ambient light sensors whose operational state is controlled through registers accessible through the I2C interface. The host can command the SI1153-AA00-GMR to initiate on-demand Ambient Light or proximity measurements. The host can also place the Si115x in an autonomous operational state where it performs measurements at set intervals and interrupts the host either after each measurement is completed or whenever the sample is larger/smaller than a set threshold value or exits/enters a set threshold window. This results in overall system power saving, allowing the host controller to operate longer in its sleep state instead of polling the Si115x.

7. Automatic mode of operation

The SI1153-AA00-GMR can be placed into an autonomous mode of operation where measurements are performed automatically without the need for explicit host commands for each measurement. The START command is used to put the Si115x into autonomous operation mode. The SI1153-AA00-GMR automatically updates the proximity and ALS I2C registers. Moderators can also choose to be notified when these new measurements can be made by enabling interrupts. The switching frequency for autonomous operation is set by the host prior to the start command. The SI1153-AA00-GMR can also interrupt the host when proximity or ALS measurements reach preset thresholds. To help handle interrupts, the registers are arranged so that the interrupt handler can perform an I2C burst read operation to read the necessary registers, starting with the interrupt status register, and cycling through the various output registers.

8. Autonomous and Forced Modes

In autonomous mode, the user sets the time to repeat the measurement using the timer fields in the global and channel-specific areas. The user then sends commands to repeatedly initiate these autonomous measurements. When the timer for each channel fires, the measurement for that channel starts. When a channel measurement is complete, it is signaled by the IRQ_STATUS bit and an interrupt. After this signal, the sensor restarts the channel timer and waits for it to trip and signal the next measurement. The host must read the data before generating the next reading, or it may lose readings or acquire garbage data for sample tailing. In force mode, all measurements enabled in CHAN_LIST start as the result of the FORCE command and are executed only once. If multiple channels are enabled, measurements are made consecutively starting with the lower numbered channel. Completion signal is the same as autonomous, IRQ_STATUS and interrupt. The logical difference is that all enabled channels always show as ready at the same time in IRQ_STATUS, which is not the case in autonomous mode. FORCE command only works for measurements with no measurement counter selected in MEASCONFIGx
