The SI5335D-B08278-GMR clock generators, phase locked loops (PLLs) and frequency synthesizers from Silicon Laboratories are widely used in a variety of applications. The core of the SI5335D-B08278-GMR Clock Generator/PLL/Synthesizer is a Silicon Lab’s Si5335L Multi-Synth™ PLL– a low-jitter, high-frequency, low-power PLL IP block that is specifically optimized for clock generation and frequency synthesis applications. The Si5335L Multi-Synth has a very impressive feature set including a wide frequency range with many different output frequencies, configurability of factors including: output frequency, output duty cycle, feedback polarity, output voltage, slew rate, and more. There are also a variety of features to optimize the PLL performance including: 4 integrated loop filters, integrated voltage regulator, dynamic output enable, jitter performance, and more.
The Si5335L Multi-Synth PLL supports a very wide input frequency range of 1 Hz to 1300 MHz with configurable output dividers, PLL dividers, and feedback dividers. This allows the clocking architecture to be optimized for many different application needs, and the SI5335D-B08278-GMR Clock Generator/PLL/Syntheszier can provide single-port outputs, dual-port outputs, differential outputs and other options. The wide range of output frequencies support up to 12.5 MHz for HSDI and HSI video, and up to 1300 MHz for a variety of data rates including 1.25 Gbps, 2.5 Gbps, 10 Gbps and beyond. The high-performance PLL architecture supports high-stability outputs with low jitter and very low additive phase noise.

The working principle at the heart of the SI5335D-B08278-GMR Clock Generator/PLL/Synthesizer is the same as the traditional phase locked loop (PLL). The loop consists of a signal reference, an input frequency, a filter, a voltage controlled oscillator (VCO), and a frequency divider. The input frequency is compared to the signal reference, and the differences in the frequency are used to control the frequency of the VCO. The frequency of the VCO is divided in order to generate a signal that matches the input frequency, and this is then used as the output of the PLL. This allows the output frequency to be precisely adjusted, and the loop is kept in a steady state by keeping the input and output signals in phase.By using the wide range of features available with the SI5335D-B08278-GMR Clock Generator/PLL/Synthesizer, designers can optimize their clocking architecture for a variety of different applications.
