The SI5355A-B01127-GM is a Clock Generator/Frequency Synthesizer from Silicon Laboratories. This device is a Voltage Controlled Oscillator (VCO) with an output frequency range from 0.2MHz up to 350MHz, including frequencies from 99MHz up to 101MHz for high frequency Precision Time Protocol (PTP) systems.The SI5355A-B01127-GM features an embedded programmable equivalent series resistance (ESR) filter to reduce in-band noise as well as a built-in clock output signal buffer to achieve superior jitter performance. Also, the device has a 3.3V LDO power supply and is optimized to run at 2.5V with a signal gain of up to 0.7V.

The SI5355A-B01127-GM clock generator is designed to meet the requirements in a wide range of applications, including satellite communications, base station systems, microwave radios, and network switches, and is particularly suitable for systems that require a high frequency PTP reference clock. With its superior jitter performance and wide output frequency range, it can also be used in a variety of other systems such as GPS/GNSS receivers, test and measurement equipment, automotive telematics and infotainment systems, and medical imaging.

The SI5355A-B01127-GM uses a Phase-Locked Loop (PLL) architecture, which consists of a voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO), a loop filter, and a phase-frequency detector. First, the user supplies a Reference Clock signal to the PLL, which is used as a reference to create a stable Clock signal at the desired output frequency. The Reference Clock signal is divided by a divider to generate a lower frequency signal and compared to the VCO output to form a feedback loop that adjusts the VCO output frequency in order to keep the two signals in phase.

The loop filter provides a DC voltage that is used to control the VCO frequency and is programmed based on the desired frequency range and the desired performance. A higher loop filter resistance means that a higher DC voltage is required to tune the VCO to the same frequency, which increases the tuning range and helps to ensure that the output frequency does not drift in the presence of noise. The SI5355A-B01127-GM is designed with a loop filter oversized to increase the tuning range.

The SI5355A-B01127-GM also incorporates a Phase-Frequency Detector (PFD) designed to support frequency hopping at low power consumption.
