The VCO is buffered and the AC coupled to the output lines. An internal frequency synthesizer generates a preset number of frequencies at which the VCO is set. A phase frequency detector is then used to sense the phase difference between the PLL’s reference clock signal and the output signal of the VCO. If the phase difference is outside of the specified limit, the PLL adjusts the VCO control voltage to move the VCO frequency to the desired frequency.
The SI5338M-B07003-GMR has an external resistor or a control voltage applied to the PLL to adjust the output frequency range and stability. For example, the VCO can be tuned with a voltage applied to the REFIN pin or with a resistor connected to the REFINH pin. The PLL also has dual switching-frequency multipliers to generate a wide range of frequencies with minimal phase noise.
The SI5338M-B07003-GMR also offers a host of versatile features, including squelch control, spread-spectrum clocking, adjustable charge pumps, and digital phase-lock loop (DPLL) reset options. A precision phase detector with wide input frequency range facilitates synchronous phase locking with stable performance even in the presence of large pulse disturbances.
